RENEWABLE ENERGY POWER STATION FOR MAGOODHOO

The community of Magoodhoo need your help to fund this project

The islanders of F.Magoodhoo (population 700), like in almost all other islands in the Maldives, currently generate electricity using small diesel electric generators. On average 22348 kWh of electricity are sold to their customers by the community operated power station per month. The electricity tariffs range from US$ 0.26 per kWh for those who consume less than a 100 kWh per month to US$ 0.78 per kWh for those who consume more than 300 kWh per month. Fuel costs represents just above 70% of total cost of energy production.

To reduce this reliance on diesel, we have planned a solar/wind hybrid system that will be connected to the existing electricity network of Magoodhoo. When completed, it will provide around 40% of the electricity demand of the community. The renewable energy part of the power station will have an installed capacity of 85kW. 25kW will be provided by photovoltaic panels and 60kW will be provided by 3 wind turbines of 20kW each. When the renewable power station is fully operational, it will reduce Magoodhoo’s fuel consumption by 28800 litres per year; reduce the emission of Carbon dioxide by 65479 kg/year, of Sulfur dioxide by 284 kg/year and of Nitrogen oxides by 138.8kg/year.

For this project we are looking for donors who are willing to help a small community in the Maldives reduce their reliance on imported diesel fuel.

For more details of the project and how to donate please read our project proposal. (pdf file).
