Absorption Chillers
Air conditioning need is the single biggest energy consumer in Maldives. Air conditioning takes about 40 to 60% of energy for a building.
Renewable Energy Maldives provides air conditioning using hot water driven absorption chillers . Absorption chillers are on average 70% more efficient than conventional split type air conditions, thus providing significant power savings. A building with air conditioning requirements of 860,000 BTU will save RF 38,000.00 per month at current electricity prices. In addition these systems will reduce carbon emissions and provide aesthetic appeal as well, as there will be no outdoor units.
The hot water driven absorption chillers use Lithium Bromide as a chemical to react with hot water to produce chilled water from hot water. The chilled water is used to cool the buildings. Lithium Bromide is non toxic and can easily be disposed. The Lithium Bromide needs to be changed only once in every 10 years. The chiller life time is more than 20 years. As it is a chemical process, there are very few moving parts. Hence, the maintenance of the system is very low, the technology very simple. The technology is proven and established. Several countries in Europe, namely Sweden, France, Finland, Germany and Netherlands, currently have more than 1400 MW (cooling) worth of systems in operation.
