H.A. Uligamu RE System

Renewable Energy Maldives assessed the problems of the Uligamu Renewable Energy (RE) system System and restored the system to working condition.

The RE system consists of wind and solar energy systems. At the time of assessment the RE system had been isolated from the islands electricity system for some time. The battery system was designed to balance the load and relieve the diesel completely. However at the time of assessment the island power load seemed much higher and the battery bank has not been properly maintained and therefore deemed unlikely to function properly. REM suggested that the battery be isolated and to connect the wind turbines and solar panels directly to the grid.

REM carried out the following work in uligamu in order to restore the RE system to working condition at the least cost.

Tied the PV system to the grid so that it works as a grid-tie PV system.

Test connection of all the 24 wind turbines as a grid tied system.

Trained two Utility staff to connect the system PV and wind turbines to the grid and test, both the PV and Wind System. The staff, were instructed on how to install the protection system before the wind system is permanently connected.

At the end of the project REM achieved the following

The PV system was up and running as a grid-tied system

The Wind system had been tested and 20 out of 24 turbines worked well.

Both the PV and wind systems were restores to working condition as a grid tied system.
